Sattu Namkeen Sharbat | Sattu drink is a vegan and gluten free tangy summer cooler originated from Bihar. It is lip-smacking and super nutritious too! It gets ready in just 5 minutes. Sattu in hindi means roasted gram flour.

Take a sip from deliciously spiced, tangy Sattu Cooler to beat the summer heat. It is an inexpensive and high protein drink that cools you from within.

Our ancestors gave us these kind of recipes instead of using Rasna, artificial colours and preservatives laced cold drinks, Glucon-D or chilled coffee shakes. Today’s generation hardly know the taste & benefits of sattu, but I must say this old style cooler is actually a treasure.

How to make sattu powder at home?

Now a days sattu powder is readily available in grocery store all over India.

However if you wish to prepare this at home, remove the black husk, thereafter dry roast chana(gram) in a pan, cool it and grind it. Your homemade sattu powder is ready to use.

Sattu, a poor man’s protein

Earlier sattu, the underrated kitchen Ingredient, was known as poor man’s protien, but it started to gain popularity slowly and gradually. It’s power house of energy and high on nutrition too.

Sattu is considered as a staple of Bihar and Jharkhand, but off late it has acquired the superfood status globally. More and more people have started to consume this knowing it’s many benefits.

What ingredients are required to make this sharbat?

To make this quick and easy sharbat, all you need is sattu powder, onions, black salt, lemon juice, cumin powder and some chilled water.

Therefore you must try delicious Sattu drink, known as desi summer cooler from Bihar.

Why is it nutritious?

In the times of protein drinks we have simply forgotten this humble tasty traditional drink which is rich in protein.

Sattu is a perfect blend of balanced nutrients and is prepared in one of the best cooking methods – roasting. In this method, the nutrition value is retained and the shelf life of the ingredients are increased.

It has high fiber content and low glycaemic index, and some very good cooling properties.

Step by step instructions to  make sattu ka sharbat | Sattu Ka Namkeen Sharbat

Take sattu ka atta in a bowl and add water. Mix with a whisk till it is fully dissolved and no lumps remain.

Add lemon juice, salt, black salt, mint, chillies and cumin powder and mix well. Leave for 5-10 minutes to soak in all the flavours.

Take 2 glasses and add ice cubes as required. Pour the drink on top through a strainer.

In addition to that, mix imli gud khajoor chutney for sweet and sour taste(optional). After that, garnish with some mint leaves.

To prepare the temper. Heat few drops of ghee in a small pan, add the mustard seeds. Let it crackle. Turn off the gas and let it cool down a bit.
Add asafoetida/hing, red chilli powder and cumin/ zeera powder and pour this to your ready sattu drink.

Serve it chilled.

Ingredients
  • Sattu ka Atta - ¾ cup
  • Cold water - 2 glasses
  • Salt - 1 tsp
  • Black Salt (Kala Namak) - 1 tsp
  • Chopped mint leaves - 1 tsp
  • Minced green chillies - ½ tbsp
  • Juice of ½ a lemon -
  • Roasted Cumin Powder/Jeera powder - 1 tsp
  • Imli gud khajoor ki chutney - 2 tbsp optional
  • Chopped mint and coriander leaves
  • For the tempering:
  • Oil - 1 tsp
  • Mustard/rai seeds - ¼ tsp
  • Heeng/asafoetida - ¼ tsp
  • Red chiili powder - ½ tsp
  • Jeera powder - ½ tsp
  • Ice cubes as needed
