Sindhi Churi Dal | Moong Dal Churi is a vegan, gluten free, no onion, no garlic, simple yet so flavourful dish made with yellow moong dal (Moong Dal dhuli / split- skinned Green Gram Beans which is also known as Yellow Lentils) and minimal basic spices.
The yellow lentils are cooked very carefully in water so that it turns tender but remains whole with each grain fluffed up beautifully. After that it’s tempered with simple spices.
The dish is finished off with a dash of amchur powder/chat masala and a squeeze of lemon juice. In the last it’s garnished with fresh coriander leaves and served hot.

Sindhi Churi Dal | Moong Dal Churi what is it?
Here churi dal translates to khili khili dal in Hindi language and in English it means each lentil grain is perfectly fluffed up.
It pairs well with Peas potato curry and Beetroot pomegranate raita.

Sindhi Churi Dal | Moong Dal Churi
Ingredients
- 1 cup moong dal/ split moong beans
- 1/2 tsp haldi/ turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 1 and 1/2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp Cumin/ jeera
- 1/2 tsp black pepper powder
- 1/2 tsp Red chilli powder
- 1/2 tsp Amchur powder or chat masala
- 1 Green chili finely chopped
Instructions
- To begin with, wash the dal thrice and soak it in enough water for at least 1-2 hours. It helps to cook dal quickly.
- Now heat a heavy bottom pan, add 3 cups of water. Bring it to a rolling boil. Add salt and turmeric powder.
- Meanwhile drain the water from the soaked dal and add this to boiling water. Let it cook for few minutes on high flame.
- Keep checking in between so that it doesn't get overcooked. It will take around 8-10 minutes.
- Once it's done, check the dal by pressing in between thumb ans index finger. It shouldn't be mushy.
- Now take off the heat and drain the excess water in colander.
For tempering
- Heat oil in a non-stick kadai. Add cumin seeds. Once the cumin seeds start splutter , add green chilli and sauté for a minute.
- Add the cooked churi dal and saute gently. Simultaneous, heat tawa/griddle. Now place this pan of cooked dal on it.
- Lower the flame, cover and let it cook further to dry out the water content from dal completely.
- Check and turn off the flame. To this sprinkle red chilli powder, black pepper powder and amchur powder.
- In the last add lemon juice, test the taste, if required adjust the salt.
- Garnish with coriander leaves, serve hot with Poori.

Method to make Sindhi Churi Dal | Moong Dal Churi

Top tips
1. Leftover churi dal can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
Before serving, place this on counter top for 1/2 and hour to attain normal room temperature. Then reheat the dal on the stove top or in the microwave
2. The best use of leftovers, make Moong dal paratha for breakfast it turns out delicious.
3. You can make Dal sandwich.
