Kala chana chaat Recipe | Black Chickpeas salad is a protein power packed salad made using black chickpeas, crunchy onions, cucumber, carrots, juicy pulpy tomatoes, and some spices.
It is a simple to make with medley of interesting flavours all in one bite. You can serve this a salad/appetizer too, but since it has chaat masala and chilies, we call it chaat.
This chaat has fresh and tangy flavors, and can be enjoyed as a great protein rich breakfast or snack. This is Vegan, gluten free & oil free too.
It takes just 10 minutes to prepare this delicious salad with pre-cooked (boiled) chickpeas. This chaat is perfect to make with leftover chickpeas too.
Whenever I make Kala chana seekh kababs, or Kala chana salad canapes, I always soak some extra chickpeas, so I can then make this salad.
What is kala chana/Black chick peas?
It is known as black chickpeas, or Bengal gram that is power house of nutrition. It’s dark brown in colour and has nutty flavour in comparison to regular chickpeas (garbanzo beans).
Kala chana, like other types of chickpeas, is high in protein, iron and fiber. We indians use chana in variety of curries, and for making chaat. Read more facts about this legume here.

Kala chana chaat | Black Chickpeas salad Ingredients
This chaat is supremely versatile. You can use whatever ingredients according to your preference. You may add or omit any of the ingredients mentioned in the list.
First and foremost to make this kala chana chaat is boiled black chickpeas. To this add cucumber, carrots, onions, tomatoes, cabbage, green chillies, coriander leaves and pomegranate.
Season it with salt, red chilli powder, roasted cumin powder, and chat masala. Drizzle lemon juice and enjoy this as breakfast, quick snack, appetizer, salad or chaat.

Step by step instructions to make kala chana chaat Recipe | Black Chickpeas salad
Soak kala chana overnight. Next day drain and rinse it. Pressure cook kala chana along with salt upto 6 whistles or till they turn tender. Keep it aside to cool. Your boiled kala chana is ready.
In a large mixing bowl, add boiled kala chana. To this add chopped tomato, onion, cucumber, cabbage, tomatoes and pomegranate pearls. In addition to that add all the spices one by one.
In the last add chopped coriander, chillies. Toss well to combine everything together and then drizzle fresh lemon juice.
Enjoy this kala chana chaat for evening snack or serve this as salad or an appetizer.

Ingredients
- 2 cups Boiled black chickpeas kala chana
- 1/2 cup chopped tomato pulp & seeds removed
- 1 large onion chopped
- 1 Cucumber chopped
- 1 cabbage chopped
- 1 carrot chopped
- 1/2 cup Pomegranate pearls
- 1-2 green chillies chopped
- Handful of chopped fresh coriander leaves
- 1 tbsp chaat masala
- 1/4 tsp pink salt
- 1 tsp roasted cumin powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- salt to taste
- Juice of 1 lemon
