Ingredients

  • 8 to 10 Hibiscus flowers
  • 3 cups Water
  • 2 tsp Simple sugar syrup
  • 1/2 Juiced lemon

To make simple sugar syrup

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

To make simple sugar syrup

  • The most common ratio to make simple syrup is equal parts of water and sugar.
  • Combine sugar and water in a pan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, until sugar has dissolved. Allow it to cool.
  • Cool it then store in an airtight glass jar, in the fridge, up to a month.

To make hibiscus tea

  • Wash the hibiscus flowers well under running water and remove the green part/calyx & staminal column of the flower as shown in the picture. We need only petals of the flower.

To make warm tea

  • Heat water in a pan, once it comes to rolling boil, drop the flower petals and switch off the flame. Cover with a lid and let it steep for 5 minutes.
  • The color of the water will turn purple. Strain the water and pour into mugs. Add the lemon juice, and the color of tea will turn to deep red colour.
  • Add simple sugar syrup to your taste and enjoy it on cold winter days.

To make iced tea

  • Follow the same instructions and in the last add ice cold water or ice cubes to the tea. Adjust the sweetness and tartness according to your taste.
  • Enjoy this hibiscus iced tea on hot summer days.

Notes

1. If you do not wish to consume the brewed tea immediately, then store it in the glass jar and keep this in the fridge for later use.
2. Do not add the lemon beforehand. Make sure you add the juice of lemon when you are about to consume the tea.
3. You may use honey, maple syrup, stevia or any other sweetner as per your preference.
4. You can add some of your favorite flavors like lemon grass, lemon zest, mint or basil leaves to your hibiscus tea.
